雁栖湖位于京郊怀柔城北8公里处的燕山脚下，北临雄伟的万里长城，南偎一望无际的华北平原，是一处风光迤逦的水上乐园。
    雁栖湖水面宽阔，湖水清澈，每年春秋两季常有成群的大雁来湖中栖息，故而得名。

    雁栖湖三面环山，北有军都山，海拔1200米；西有红螺山，海拔811米；东有金灯山，海拔186米，山上有枫树、松柏、火炬树及其乔灌木，面积达1.5平方公里。整个旅游景区内植被覆盖率90%。三面环山，形成天然屏障，湖区内无风沙侵袭，一年四季空气潮湿，常年平均气温11.7摄氏度，年降雨量666.4毫米，相对湿度年平均为55%，7—8月份为75—77%，大气质量一级。湖内水质清纯，有鱼、虾、龟等水生动物几十种，并多次发现金边地龟和娃娃鱼等珍惜动物，对水质要求很高的大雁、仙鹤、白天鹅、淡水鸥等珍禽候鸟常在湖岸栖息繁衍。1986年以来，投资300万元，对公园进行了大规模的园林式绿化美化改造。大门区和北门区修建了具有江南风格的园林小品：在湖边开辟了10000平米的花园式绿地，增植枫树、银杏、合欢、翠竹、法桐等名贵花木10万余株，做到了三季有花，四季常青。经多年建设，雁栖湖内人文景观与自然景观融为一体，春夏浓荫蔽日；金秋，一片火红，万里长城隐现在峰峦叠嶂之间，千顷湖面，碧波荡漾，百船争流，为画家写生创作提供了良好场所。山上植物有100余种，为青少年采集植物标本、制作各种植物艺术品创造了有利条件，雁栖湖已成为风光游览、观光的理想场所。

    雁栖湖游乐园环境优美，景色宜人，是京郊著名得体育健身、休闲度假的胜地。游乐园内各种娱乐设施齐全，现有水上、陆地项目40余种，可供不同年龄的游客选择。其中水上飞伞、水上跑车、水上自架摩托、水上飞降、水幕电影、火箭式蹦极、空中飞人、激流勇进、攀岩、射箭、戏水池等健身娱乐项目深受广大游客的喜爱。游客可乘船游湖，纵横千米湖面，或披波斩浪，尽情领略搏击风浪的情趣。游客还可登临望湖亭，领略湖光山色，尽情回归大自然的惬意。
    夜色降临，湖边凉风习习，游人在优美的湖光山色中欣赏新颖奇妙的水幕电影和五彩缤纷的音控喷泉，或在露天广场轻歌曼舞，令人浮想连篇，留连忘返。

        Located 8 km north of the county seat of Huairou, Yanqi Lake is a beautiful aquatica at the foot of Yanshan Mountain. The Great Wall is to the north of the Lake, and on the south, there lies the boundless North China plain.
        With limpid water, the Lake has a spacious surface. The air in the tourist zone is refreshing, and the landscape beautiful. In spring and autumn, there are flocks of swans on the Lake and so it is got the name -- Yanqi Lake. Which in Chinese means: Swans dwell on lake.
